Insurance/Recovery Tip:

Tips for Buying Insurance

If you are having difficulty finding homeowner insurance coverage:

  • Always strive to be “insured to value” which is full replacement cost.  Get full coverage on your house by multiplying your house square footage PLUS any attached garage, decks, porches and patios times the construction cost for each element.
  • Offer to increase your deductible to the maximum the insurance company or your mortgage company will allow.  Knowing that you will not likely file a minor claim makes you a better customer to them and helps you avoid those pesky premium increases if you do file a small claim.
  • Call an agent or broker farther from your house.  Insurance agents and brokers appreciate the opportunity to market beyond their usual concentration of local homeowners.
  • Avoid “non-admitted” carriers and FAIR Plan.  If the agent says you must get FAIR Plan, talk to the agent or broker about a supplemental “Wrap-around” policy where FAIR Plan and another insurance company share full risk of any fire or other peril loss.
  • Avoid especially a “difference in condition” (DIC) supplemental homeowner policy which actually takes away important coverages, like fire coverage.  Ouch!

Sempra News:

The stench in Sacramento
September 14, 2009

Assemblyman Mike Duvall's abrupt decision to resign after a video leaked out of him making lurid boasts about affairs with two women must not bring this scandal to a quick close. There remain many unanswered questions about the conduct of the Yorba Linda Republican — and much broader concerns about how laws are made in Sacramento.

Duvall, who has long posed as a family-values conservative, now says he was just telling “tall tales.” One of the women — who is a lobbyist for Sempra Energy, the San Diego-based energy company — also denies having an affair.

Rebuild continues after ’07 fires

“It’s going to take years,” said Teresa Manley predicted two years ago in reference to the recovery efforts for the wildfires that scorched 500,000 acres and destroyed 2,000 Southern California homes in 2007. Manley had been involved in the interfaith long-term recovery from the 2003 wildfires.
