Insurance/Recovery Tip:

Preliminary Notices and Mechanics Liens
from www.contractorsfromhell.com

Every homeowner who embarks on a home remodeling or building project looks forward to their dream home beginning to take shape. They anticipate a flurry of activity at the beginning, first with demolition followed by the arrival of materials and subcontractors ready to work.

Shortly thereafter, certified letters requiring their signature arrive in the mail from suppliers and subcontractors. When they anxiously open the letters to read the words “Preliminary Notice” stating that someone is asserting lien rights against their property – they panic!  But they shouldn’t – at least not at this point. The homeowner is simply being alerted to a commonly used legal instrument in construction that ensures payment for services, labor and materials provided for a home remodeling or building project.

Malibu attorney James Devitt said on Monday he plans to file a lawsuit against the state on behalf of 75 victims of last November's Corral Fire. Devitt's clients announced their intention to seek compensation from the state, which they say failed to take the appropriate precautions to prevent the fire, earlier this year.

Disaster Prepared:

Protecting your physical assets

Last week I talked about securing your computer information, but today I want to mention a service I heard about to protect your valuable documents. Of course you can open a safety deposit box at your bank or trade contents with a trusted friend (hopefully FAR away from your house), but this company will actually come to your home and pick things up and offers storage space much larger than your typical safe deposit box.

Check out their website's FAQ for more information.
