Insurance/Recovery Tip:

Using Stock Photos

If you lost photos of popular places, then you should be able to buy stock photos of those places and include the cost in your personal property inventory. For example, I went to www.shutterstock.com and searched for "Empire State Building" and found tons of pictures of New York like this:
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-2740583-new-york-city.html

How about Mount Rushmore:

... or the great wall of China
http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-13653511-great-wall-of-china.html

There are many sites out there like www.istockphoto.com, www.gettyimages.com, www.istockphoto.com. Here's a site that has stock footage www.fotosearch.com.

Get creative! Maybe you can get even hire someone to Photoshop you and your family into the photo!

While we're on the topic of photos, don't forget to add to your personal property inventory: film, processing, photo albums, album pages, photo corners, photo tape and/or glue, scrapbooking materials and scrapbooking supplies. If pictures were framed, then include the frame and mat and professional framing if it was a custom frame.

If you had digital photos on a computer that was lost, but you had them uploaded to a site like www.snapfish.com, then order CD/DVD backups so you can have a copy at home like you did prior to the fire. Also, if you had movies uploaded to a site like www.homemovie.com you should order tapes or DVD’s of your movies so you'll have them at home again.

If you were a scrap booker, don't forget scissors, stamps, punches, stencils, templates, stickers, markers, pens special paper). Here are a couple of scrapbook supply websites to jog your memory:

CARe Update:

Personal Property Inventory Meetings

This past month we started a series of personal property inventory workshops. Teri Mitze lost her home in Lake Arrowhead in the 2003 fire and will be conducting these seminars. Her method includes a series of codes to make valuing your items easier and a memory jogging method to help you remember what was in your house.

We've had three seminars since the beginning of July and will have three more this month. Two will be held in San Diego and one in Lake Arrowhead. The scheduled dates in San Diego are Saturday, August 18 at 1pm and Wednesday, August 20 at 6:30 pm. They will be held at the Holiday Inn: 17065 West Bernardo Drive, San Diego CA 92127. The Lake Arrowhead meeting will take place on August 24, but the time and location has yet to be determined so watch our meeting calendar for updates!

Even if your insurance company did not require an inventory, if you plan on claiming damage in a lawsuit (lawsuits are forming in Malibu, San Diego and Lake Arrowhead), you will still need an inventory. Start now before your memory fades.

Litigation Q&A:

Hiring an Attorney FAQ

We have seen various disputes and issues—property lines and easements, property trusts, divorce settlements, bad faith, construction defect and negligent conduct—arise after any disaster.  You may need to hire an attorney to resolve your particular dispute or issue.  Here are some answers to questions we’ve been asked:

  1. Does it cost me more money if the attorney fees are based on my GROSS settlement instead of my NET settlement?
  2. Could I still owe my attorney money even if I lose my case?
  3. Can a contingency fee attorney ask for “up-front” money in exchange for a reduction in the percentage they charge?

Tons of Questions
By Dana Wilkie, Brooke Williams and Danielle Cervantes, Union Tribune

August 3, 2008 SAN DIEGO “The city of San Diego rushed to hire contractors to help homeowners in Rancho Bernardo clear their lots after the firestorms of 2007. It turned out to be an expensive venture for taxpayers, who will cover what private insurance doesn't.”

July 23, 2008 SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Allstate Corp. reported a 98% drop in second-quarter net income late Wednesday as the auto and homeowner insurer suffered losses on some of its big mortgage-related investments and paid a record amount of catastrophe claims for this time of year.

Disaster Prepared:

New Orleans thought it was safe. Do you?

“A whopping forty-three percent (43%) of the American population lives in areas protected by levees, and 122 of those levees have been identified and declared unsafe by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

“Levees.Org has converted the Corps' list of 122 levees into a searchable data base so you can see if you're safe.

“Find out if you're safe!”

Disaster News:

Portraits of firefighters who died in helicopter crash slowly emerge
By Peter H. King, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

August 10, 2008 MEDFORD, ORE. -- It followed the common pattern. At first, details were few: nine fatalities in the crash of a helicopter ferrying firefighters in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Seven of the dead and three of the injured were contract firefighters, hired hands brought down from Oregon to bolster the lines in an onslaught of Northern California fires.
