Late last June, a stream of lava flow from the Kilauea volcano began to flow on Hawaii’s Big Island. By late October, the lava was threatening to destroy homes. Now residents of the Big Island are fighting back and asking for the State of Hawaii’s help because their homeowners insurance coverage has been canceled. The reason listed: the Puna Lava flow.

(Bloomberg) -- Allstate Insurance Co. agreed to settle a 2011 lawsuit accusing Morgan Stanley of fraud over more than $100 million worth of mortgage-backed securities in which the insurer invested. The largest publicly traded U.S. home and auto insurer sued Morgan Stanley and other lenders in 2011, alleging they sold packages of risky home loans while claiming they conformed with “conservative” underwriting standards.

Last week, a court in California ruled against Mercury Insurance Company which challenged an earlier order from the California Insurance Commissioner requiring it to reduce homeowner insurance rates. In that same lawsuit, various insurance industry trade associations intervened to separately challenge certain laws that regulate what advertising costs insurance companies can pass onto consumers.(1)

While the 5.7 earthquake that shook the coast of Northern California on Wednesday caused no major damage or injuries, it did serve as a vivid reminder that people in many parts of the U.S. face risks from earthquakes and should consider purchasing earthquake insurance coverage, according to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.).
