About CARe

Mission Statement
Community Assisting Recovery, Inc., CARe, is a non-profit Southern California based corporation established in 1994 working in disaster areas to provide education to residents, property owners and construction professionals about the insurance claims process.

History
CARe, with a grant from Fannie Mae, originated in Los Angeles in response to the Northridge Earthquake. Since April 1994, CARe has assisted thousands of homeowners, at no cost to them, to obtain information and resources to rebuild their earthquake, and more recently, wind, fire and flood damaged properties.

CARe has brought to the communities it has served in excess of 3 billion dollars in insurance funds and other resources. Sine 1994 , often through questions raised by property owners at our workshops, CARe has developed a unique understanding of the insurance claims process.

CARe has provided:

  • Damage and loss documentation for mediation and litigation.
  • Consultant in disaster victim tax relief legislation
  • Testimony at public insurance and disaster hearings
  • Participation in successful suite against 20th Century Insurance Company petitioned to the US Supreme Court.

.

Currently

CARe is holding group meetings to assist property owners in resolving disaster related insurance claim questions.

CARe, through its many volunteers in California, and its Executive Director, George Kehrer, can provide pertinent information regarding the insurance claim process through group meetings and one-on-one appointments with homeowners.

Lila Hayes - consultant

email - lila@carehelp.org

Lila Hayes's mother's house, the home Lila Hayes grew up in, was totally destroyed in the 2003 Southern California wild fires. Assuming the tasks of recovery for her mother, Lila struggled through the challenges of survivor recovery. Her focus and energy led her to CARe survivor recovery meetings at a local church. Through these meetings, she started the ad hoc organization, Old Fire Recovery Group, to help fire survivors in San Bernardino. She now keeps current on disaster recovery issues, maintains the website, Disaster Survivor Network, and advises survivors of other disasters, including Hurricane Katrina survivors with the Los Angeles non-profit group, Community Partners. She also maintains CARe's website as part of her computer consulting business. Through Lila's complete immersion in the recovery process, Lila's mother has returned to a new house that more fully meets the needs of the 21st century.
